I have this theory; everybody in the world is bisexual in one way or another. HOWEVER, they can only realise this if their attraction to both the male and female gender is equal, if one outweighs the other, the individual will be convinced that they are either homosexual or heterosexual. I definently agree with alex and zack, it is completely wrong for them to try to ruin their son's life simply because he chose to - not even to throw away the religion - just to not believe in some of the religion's concepts.
I partially agree with you zack. I feel that the mezanis forcing religion and thought onto tehir daughter is inexcusable, however, I also feel that it is good and necessary that they provide it to her. They should not force it on her, but they should force her to learn about it, after which she should make a choice

Although, you do depend on your parents for truths, I don't think religion should be one of them. I think everyone should choose what to believe for themselves. When (if) I have a kid and they come home from school saying things like "Jesus is the king of the sky," I'm not going to say, no, whoever told you that is wrong, I'll say, I don't believe that, but if you want to believe that it's your choice, and if you want, I'll help you learn more about the king of the sky. I don't think religion should be passed down through families, just because it doesn't work that way. What about Anya, her paernts are passing their religion on, and the effect of that is she can't date. Is that ok?
i know jeff---I was just making fun of you :-) anyway----Zack, i agree with you-----I think that no one should be prostelatized (sp) but I do think that religion inside a family as passed from parents to child is an extremely important thing, religion is a framework within which to show, demonstrate, and teach important lessons about right and wrong and life. Also, religion provides a great sense of continuity and family. I don't really believe in Judaism, but I still love being a jew because of teh community it creates, I love getting together with my family and seeing them during teh high-holy days and such, and I feel that is an even more important facet of religion then the spiritual part. All of us on this site, with the exception of morgan have been/are in some sort of religious(ethical) learning community, and we all know the friends that you make, simply because you have this common cultural ground to start on. THat is something religion provides, that many people cannot find elsewhere
and to talk about jeff's commment, polytheism and paganism are much more diffucult o dscuss simply because many of us know so ittle about them, I took a comparative religion class in sunday school this semester, and they are very confusing, and really in many ways, many times defeat teh whole purpose of modern religion, because they have no solid set of ideals and beliefs.
i think we shouldent base so much of our topics on western religon and that mabye if we look at other polytheistic religons we might be able to talk more or pagenism. and to alex..im not just writeing to be an ass thats not what i said i said that i dont believe in everyuthing that im saying but i do think a lot of it is good

btw: i do have a problem with zack's sister joining. I think this should be in our age group. and currently my view on the soon to be eighth graders is that they are all ho's and younger and may not understand some of the things that we talk about- and have more immature views. You may dissagree but I have two sisters and understand why zack wouldn't want his sister on this site so i vote no, she shouldn't be allowed to join.
The reason I mainly wanted to change it is because we've been on religion far too long, everyone's said something, so can we move on to something just as thought provocing other than religion...
I agree with Alex, you can't just change the subject, the point of this site is to just see where our thoughts take us. Anyway, religion isn't all bad, I guess, you just have to dig through the crap and get to what it really means. The problem is all the power it gives people. There shouldn't be a pope, people should just read the Bible, and talk to their friends about it. Buddhism has the right idea, there's a proverb that says "If you meet the buddha on the road, kill him." It means that you don't need someone telling you what to believe. Because that's really what Religion is, it's worshiping something that tells you what to believe, and you shouldn't need that, you should be able to use your own brain and figure out what is true for yourself, because that's the only way you can be truly sure.
i ahve no problem with your sisten joining, but if you do, tehn i do---morgan, we cannot change the topic for exactly that reason, we want to discuss these topics that are hard to discuss, that need different sides, that require thought, we want to answer questions that are pertinent to teh world in a meningful and thoughtful way, but we might just be yelling at each other if we were writing spur of the moment out loud. these are issues I am sure we have all thought about internally, but to see the other side we must break free of our assumptions, but a mind finds it extremely hard to break free and we must ahev other people talk about our opinions and theirs to really understnad an issue (and yes I have been reading Ender's Shadow this week)

Though sometimes I feel that there is truly religion, I make it for myself. I pray every once in a while and things sure for really important events and such, but when I do it, I usually do it to organize my thoughts and figure out a way to make something possible. Or if there is no other way I suppose that yes I do believe in a higher power, but I also believe that we should look at ourselves like we look at other mammals, we want to reproduce, and be better off than others. This causes fights, social groups, criticism, sadness, the rich and the poor. This is why sometimes to escape I curl into a ball and hope that there is a god that does this all for a reason, because if this is all for nothing...what happens after we die...we can't just dissapear- can we, like we appeared when we are born. Haha personally I was one of those kids who wanted to die just because I wanted to see what came next, Curiousity killed the morgan...yeah. God is confusing. it is taken in the wrong way, to me when i'm in these all god believing moods, god looks down upon me and you cannot see him- he is no man, he is more than that, men and women can become angels but god is a presence, it helps and hurts. He makes the bad so that we can see the good. He hurts us so we can heal eachother. In a book I am reading by Ethan Hawke (who btw is an amazing writer) he talks about how this character struggles, and finally decides that he believes in god. it's pretty insightful the way he struggles to find himself and how he goes through all this triumph and then talks about how it was god's work...he also talks about how he needs stability, building blocks- to me I think it's scary to get too believing in one culture, but even in story books they tell good from bad the knight in shining armor, cinderella gets the shoe because she was good to others, they live happilly ever after except for her evil stepsisters and stepmother, but these all must have been based on god, based on the building blocks of good and bad. That is why I am in turmoil- i fear giving myself to religion because I want to be free to decide within myself what is right and wrong, have learned enough in life to know that killing someone is horrendous, imagine being killed i mean it's not a pretty sight...i'd rather people as someone said earlier were spiritual, in balance with good and bad but to get there you need building blocks, and though things such as the bible provide them, i think it's better to pick and choose because some of church is shit, and it shouldn't be involved with any children in schools or in any court or anything to do with the goverment of our nation. to me it is impecable that church and state must stay different, which is why i think that i believe in the letter alex posted a while back.
can we please get off of religion it's stressful...lets talk about something relevant but light for a while to get over this huge hump: If you could spit on anyone's shoes, who would it be and why? If you could go anywhere with anyone, who would you take and where would you go? If you had all the money in the world for a day but had the knowledge that any cash you had the next day would be gone no matter where it was, what would you buy/do?

people are not being sold religon. the so called sellers are trying to get you to convert for your own good because they think that you will burn in hell if you dont and that your life could be better if you listen to the prechings of church. the people trying to convert you are not getting paid to convery you they are doing it because they feel that is right. science may give you a feeling of orginization but it doesnt give you a feel of comunity. it religon it doesnt matter who you are or what your past is, you will still be taken in. if you go into a labritory and you droped out of highschool you will not be able to feel welcome in a room full of degreed scientists. Religon is not being presented to to solve the mysteries of the universe but it can be worked into science to show some truth.
(BTw. im just taking the side of religon because i didnt think anyone else would. im not a true believer im a... suspecter)

But isn't it better to be good because good is GOOD, instead of being afraid all the time? Sure, religion has organized people, but for totally wrong reasons. There is a difference between spirituality and religion. Religion is what you are being sold, but spirituality is what it's made of. Strip away the flesh and bones of religion, and what you get is spirituality, which is basically living life with the thought that everyone is sacred, and that that shoul be a good enough reason for these-

Either way, you should live life asa good person in order to assure that your life is good, not because you want to go to heaven, because there is no proof for heaven, and either way, you have a nice life and die, or you have a nice life and go to heaven (or, for me, purgatory - virtuous non-believers, although this post may have me wherever they toss heretics...).
the organization provided by religion is ok, but the religion itself is just stories. there is no proof and no reason to believe in it. I feel MORE organization from science and theories with actual proof than I do from any form of religion. I guess they're just two different ways of looking at things, I look for facts and evidence more than tradition.
